Last year a bill was proposed in the House by Congressmen John Garamendi and Duncan Hunter, and jointly sponsored by Senator Cruz and Markey in the Senate. This bill is the National Timing Security and Resilience Act of 2018.

On November 27th, the House passed the bill and sent it to the President for signature.

The act tasks the Secretary of Transportation with establishing a terrestrial backup timing system for GPS by 2020.
